Now, contrast that with the vibrant energy of a modern art gallery, where asymmetry reigns, and every twist and turn surprises the senses. From the calm embrace of symmetry to the dynamic allure of asymmetry, geometry plays a symphonic role in shaping spaces that resonate with our emotions and intellect.

Where the Colosseum in Rome embodies classical symmetry with its precisely balanced architecture, in contrast, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, is a masterpiece of asymmetrical design, drawing visitors into a dynamic journey through its winding, interconnected spaces. These iconic structures showcase the evolution of the architectural principles across different eras.

The Poetry of Mathematical Precision

I grew up being infatuated with design and math. I later realized how in the realm of design, mathematics is not just a subject from school but a poetic language that architects and designers use to compose and detail their masterpieces. Consider the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical marvel that finds its way into the spirals of seashells and the patterns of sunflowers. It is worth comparing how these mathematical intricacies can create a sense of harmony and balance in our surroundings. An example of this is the Pantheon in Rome, in which complex mathematical principles and advanced engineering were used to create a perfect spherical unreinforced concrete dome construction. Built in ancient Rome between 118 and 125 AD, it is one of the largest of its kind and remains a testament to the enduring brilliance of ancient Roman architecture.

Cultural Kaleidoscope: Islamic Geometry

Being immersed in Middle Eastern and South Asian culture in my youth, I fell in love with  Islamic geometric patterns that transformed spaces into mesmerizing tapestries of pattern, color and interplay of light. If you wander through the Alazhar Mosque in Cairo, or the famous Alhambra in Spain, you can feel how the geometric patterns transcend to tell stories of culture, history and spiritual connection. As light filters through the jaalis, the interplay of shapes creates a mesmerizing display of shadows. Through the infiniteness of the repetitive geometry, you can feel the touch of the divine in the everyday spaces.
